State Library of Western Australia
Located over the railway line in the Perth Cultural Centre the State Library of Western Australia has been collecting and sharing the State's cultural and social documentary heritage since 1887. With access to resources for information, learning, and recreation available in person or online, the State Library is your go to place for information about Western Australia. Wander through an exhibition, read a book or enjoy a film - there's something for everyone.
For children and families visit The Story Place where you can relax and share a story on comfy cushions; dress up and play with puppets or look at original artworks by children's book illustrators. There are computers for children to listen to online audio stories and activity stations and special programs every school holidays.
In the Discovery Lounge you can sit and chat with friends or connect with them online by booking a computer or with free wireless access.
What's in a name? The Alexander Library Building was opened in 1985 and named named after Professor Fred Alexander, Chairman of the Library Board from 1952-1982.
J.S. Battye Library of Western Australian History named in honour of James Sykes Battye (1871-1954) who was the first Chief Librarian of the Victoria Public Library and he remained in office for sixty years until his death in 1954.
