Comedy venue pops up at State Theatre Centre

A new custom-designed pop-up comedy venue at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia will be a key feature of the 2015 Fringe World Festival.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said ‘The Gold Digger’ would house national and international stand-up comedians.

“Pop-up venues have become one of the great features of Fringe World in Northbridge and the Perth Cultural Centre,” Mr Day said.

“This new project in the State Theatre Centre’s courtyard will add to the vibrancy and energy of Fringe World and the city this summer.

“The name - The Gold Digger - gives it a distinctly Western Australian gold rush theme and is consistent with travelling Fringe venues around the world which have their own quirky names and identities.”

The Minister said the Perth Theatre Trust was supporting Fringe World to present the comedy program each night throughout the festival.

“This is a new long-term collaboration for the Perth Theatre Trust as it moves to engage with wider audiences, and Fringe World provides an exciting vehicle for this,” he said.

Mr Day said the initiative for the State Theatre Centre’s courtyard followed the successful use of the space during the popular free Friday night Courtyard Concert Series.
