Albany Entertainment Centre to get first glimpse of 'Lighthouse Girl'
Albany residents will get a ‘sneak peak’ next week of a possible new Western Australian theatre production of Lighthouse Girl based on the award-winning novels by Albany writer Dianne Wolfer.
The project to develop the play is a collaboration between Perth Theatre Trust and Black Swan State Theatre Company and is a Rio Tinto Black Swan Commission.
This first free public reading of the draft script by award-winning West Australian playwright Hellie Turner will be held at the Albany Entertainment Centre (AEC) in the Kaylenup Studio on Friday 12 June 2015 at 6:30pm.
Perth Theatre Trust Acting General Manager Rudi Gracias said the Trust was pleased to be working with Black Swan State Theatre Company to help bring this local World War 1 story to the stage.
“The Trust is keen to work with local theatre companies, particularly on productions such as this which resonate with the local community.”
Mr Gracias said Albany Entertainment Centre manager Garry Snowdon had approached Black Swan more than two years ago to see if the two organisations could work together to bring the new work to the stage.
Black Swan State Theatre Company General Manager Natalie Jenkins said she had been looking at ways to engage more with Albany Entertainment Centre on something that was close to the hearts of both organisations, and this fit beautifully.
“Black Swan is thrilled to be working with the Trust and we look forward to welcoming the community, both locals and artists alike, to witness this reading. It’s a very important part of developing works for the stage and in assessing the response to the work.”

Lighthouse Girl is set in 1914 using numerous local and exotic locations including Breaksea Island, King George Sound Albany, Broadmeadows (Victoria), Colombo, Anzac Cove and Egypt. The play is based on diaries, letters, archival footage and newspaper reports of the time including Wolfer’s novels Lighthouse Girl and Lighthorse Boy. It is an accessible, moving account of this devastating war that commemorates the sacrifice and courage of all those involved.
Actors reading include: Adam Booth, Alex Malone, Nick Maclaine, Igor Sas and Nathan Whitebrook with dramaturgy by Polly Low.
